Wheel Bearing Noise — What It Sounds Like, and What It Costs
A hum or growl that rises with road speed — not engine speed — is the wheel-bearing signature, and these records are unusually decisive: the overwhelming majority of these visits end in a wheel bearing. The sound is the diagnosis; the trick is telling it from tire noise.
This page is a focused cut of the broader Noise While Driving records.

part involved, so shares overlap and don't add up to 100%. Among visits that ended in a parts repair.

The swerve test
Bearing noise changes when the car's weight shifts: louder swinging one way, quieter the other, because the swerve loads and unloads the bad bearing. Tire noise doesn't care. Shops confirm the same way, then find the corner on a lift by feel.
Why not to ride it out
A bearing run long gets loose, and a loose bearing lets the wheel wobble — steering vagueness, uneven tire wear, and in the endgame a wheel that isn't fully attached. The hum stage is the cheap stage.
What the job includes
Most modern vehicles use a sealed hub assembly — bearing, hub, and often the wheel-speed sensor in one unit — replaced as a piece. Where the ABS sensor is built in, a bearing on its way out can even light the ABS or traction lights first.
