Squealing Noise — What It Usually Is, and What It Costs
A squeal is almost always rubber or metal complaining at speed — and in these records the serpentine belt and its pulleys own the engine-bay version, while brake pads own the rolling version. When it happens tells you which one you have.
This page is a focused cut of the broader Noise While Driving records.

What the technician found
“When first start engine will hear terrible noise for a few seconds.. engine was 4 1/2 quarts low on oil”
“1. R&r alternator assembly noise went away”
“Inspect pulley for play, inspect belt tensioners, run with belt back on car and added tension and the noise when away. Needs belt tensioner”
Squeal at startup or with the A/C
A squeal on cold start that fades, or one that appears when the A/C or steering loads up, is belt territory: a glazed or loose serpentine belt, a tired tensioner, or a drying pulley bearing. It's the most common outcome here and among the cheaper ones.
Squeal while rolling that stops when you brake
That's the brake-pad wear indicator, not the belt — the brakes-squeaking records tell that story, and catching it at the squeal stage is what keeps rotors off the bill.
Squeal under the squeal
A belt that keeps squealing after replacement is a message: something it drives is dragging — commonly the water pump, alternator, or power-steering pump bearings, the heavier outcomes in this family.
