What this repair is

The compressor is the pump at the heart of the A/C — when it seizes or its clutch fails, cooling stops, sometimes with a squeal or a rattle. A proper replacement includes the receiver-drier, often the expansion device, a system flush if the old compressor shed debris, then evacuation and recharge. Skipping the flush after a noisy failure is how new compressors die young.

What moves the price

Quotes near the low end usually mean compressor only with no drier or flush, remanufactured unit. Quotes near the high end usually mean system flush after a noisy failure, expansion valve replaced with it, rear-A/C vehicles with extra refrigerant.
