Engine Ticking or Knocking — What It Usually Is, and What It Costs
Ticks and knocks from the engine bay range from trivia to trouble, and the records lean reassuring: belt-driven accessories and their pulleys, exhaust leaks, and timing hardware make up most of these outcomes — full engine failures are the rare tail, not the rule.
This page is a focused cut of the broader Noise While Driving records.

*Share of visits whose repair involved this part. Combined repairs count toward each
part involved, so shares overlap and don't add up to 100%. Among visits that ended in a parts repair.
†Middle half of real invoices (25th–75th percentile) when this was the only fix — parts + labor, all vehicle types.

“When a/c on feels like draws down veh-- heard noise when driving into shop- changed oil and didnt hear noise again-- road tested after fixing wheel bearing- no noise”

Tick that follows engine speed
A tick that speeds up exactly with RPM and changes when accessories load is usually a pulley, tensioner, belt, or water-pump bearing — the accessory family that dominates these visits.
Tick loudest on cold start
A cold tick that fades as the engine warms is often a small exhaust-manifold leak sealing itself as the metal expands — or lifters waiting for oil pressure. An overdue oil change makes the lifter version louder.
Deep knock under load
A hard, deep knock that gets worse under acceleration is the serious end — timing components or the bottom end. It's the minority of these records, but it's the one that justifies stopping early and diagnosing properly.
