Rattling Noise — What It Usually Is, and What It Costs
Rattles are the loose-hardware family of car noises — something with play in it chattering over pavement. In these records the sway-bar links lead the outcomes, with struts and other suspension joints behind them; the exhaust system's heat shields supply the cheap and famous version.
This page is a focused cut of the broader Clunking or Rattling Over Bumps records.

Rattle over bumps
A metallic rattle or clatter over broken pavement is the sway-bar-link signature — small joints at each end of the stabilizer bar that wear loose. They're among the least expensive suspension fixes, which is good news for the most common outcome here.
Rattle underneath at idle
A tinny buzz under the car at idle or at certain RPMs is usually a loose exhaust heat shield — harmless-sounding advice until you've heard one. It's often a clamp-and-weld fix rather than parts.
Rattle with clunks mixed in
When the rattle deepens into clunks on bumps, you're in worn strut and joint territory — the heavier end of these outcomes. The related clunking-noise records show how those visits end.
