Car Stalls or Dies While Driving — What It Usually Is
A car that dies while moving is losing spark, fuel, or charging — and unlike a no-start, it strands you in traffic, so shops treat it seriously. These visits end in a wider spread of fixes than most complaints; the leaders are below.
What it actually turns out to be

| Alternator | 11.1% | $302 – $563 | $414 |
| Fuel Filter | 10.8% | $134 – $436 | $256 |

*Share of visits whose repair involved this part. Combined repairs count toward each
part involved, so shares overlap and don't add up to 100%. Among visits that ended in a parts repair.
†Middle half of real invoices (25th–75th percentile) when this was the only fix — parts + labor, all vehicle types.

“Concern we put a new battery in this truck and over the weekend it is dead so we need to do major electrical diag to figure out what is killing the light”
“Customer replaced battery and alternator, and had coil and plugs replaced, but it keeps stalling out while driving. happens when coming to a stop.”
“Vehicle is stalling when coming to a stop”
Dies and restarts after sitting
Stall-then-restart after a rest is a classic overheating fuel pump or failing crank sensor pattern — components that quit hot and recover cool. It gets worse until it doesn't restart at all.
Battery light before the stall
If a battery warning preceded the stall, the alternator likely quit and the car ran the battery flat — the fix is the charging system, not the engine.
Stalls at idle only
Dying at stoplights but running fine at speed points at idle-control: throttle body carbon, vacuum leaks, idle-air valves. Often one of the cheaper outcomes.
