Brakes Squeaking or Squealing — What It Is, and What It Costs
A squeak or squeal from the brakes is usually the built-in wear indicator doing its job: a small steel tab that sings against the rotor when the pads run low. Caught at this stage, the repair is at its cheapest — these visits end in pads far more often than anything else.
This page is a focused cut of the broader Grinding or Squealing Noise When Braking records.

The wear indicator
A steady squeal while driving that quiets when you press the brake is the classic wear-tab sound. It means pad material is low but not gone — the window where pads-only is still realistic and the rotors can often be saved.
Morning squeal that fades
A squeal on the first few stops of a damp morning is often just surface rust wiped off the rotors — normal, and not a failure. If it persists once things warm up, think wear indicator instead.
Squeal with a shudder or grind creeping in
Squealing that gains a scraping edge or a pulsing pedal is the transition to the expensive stage. The outcomes on the grinding page show where that road ends.
