Brakes Grinding — What It Means, and What It Costs

Based on real repair records · last updated September 4, 2026
92.7%
of these visits involve Brake Pads — typically $223 – $554 when it's the only fix
Computed from real repair visits where the customer reported grinding brakes.

Grinding is the brake noise you don't wait on: in most of these records it means the pad friction material is gone and the metal backing plate is cutting into the rotor. Nearly every grinding visit ends in pads, and most take the rotors with them — the grinding itself is what ruins them.

Why grinding costs more than squealing

Squealing is the wear indicator saying 'soon'; grinding means 'now'. Once metal touches metal the rotors are being machined away with every stop, which is why grinding visits so often end in a pads-and-rotors bill instead of pads alone.

Grinding on one corner

If one wheel grinds, drags, or smells hot, a sticking caliper is the likely reason the pads died early on that side — and it shows up in these outcomes attached to the pad-and-rotor jobs it caused.

Grinding from the rear

On vehicles with rear drums, the same story plays out as shoes and drums. A parking brake that barely holds is often part of the same visit.
