How long can you drive?
Not far. With the alternator offline you're on battery reserve — often under an hour, less at night with lights and wipers. Power steering and brakes keep working, but when the battery empties, the engine dies wherever you are.
Alternator versus belt
A squeal before the light, or a light that came on after driving through deep water, hints at the belt or its tensioner — the cheap end of these outcomes. No noise and a gradual dimming story reads alternator.
Why the battery still gets tested
A charging-system visit starts with testing both: a failing battery can overwork an alternator, and a dead alternator can murder a good battery. Shops test first so you don't buy both when one is the culprit.
