What this repair is

The steering rack turns steering-wheel motion into wheel motion. Racks fail by leaking at their end seals, developing play, or binding at center. Replacement is a substantial job — subframe access, new fluid and a flush on hydraulic racks, then an alignment — which is why a leaking rack is the expensive answer to a power-steering puddle.
