Check Engine Light On — What It Usually Means, and What It Costs

Based on real repair records · last updated September 4, 2026
17.6%
of these visits involve Spark Plugs — typically $170 – $474 when it's the only fix
Computed from real repair visits where the customer reported a check engine light.

The check engine light is the engine computer reporting a fault code — anything from a loose gas cap to a dying catalytic converter. The light itself doesn't say which; the code narrows it, and the pattern below shows how these visits actually end.

Steady light

A steady light with the car driving normally is rarely an emergency — emissions-related causes like oxygen sensors and EVAP valves dominate. Get the code read soon (many shops scan free), keep driving gently in the meantime.

Flashing light

A flashing check engine light means active misfire — raw fuel reaching the catalytic converter. That's a stop-driving-soon situation: the misfire itself may be a cheap coil or plug, but cooking the converter turns it into four figures.

Light after refueling

A light that appears right after a fill-up is the EVAP system's signature — often a loose or worn gas cap, next most often a purge valve. It's the cheapest family of check-engine causes.
