Brake Light Not Working — What It Is, and What It Costs

of these visits involve Bulb — typically $38 – $146 when it's the only fix
Computed from real repair visits where the customer reported a brake light out.

A dead brake light is a rear-end collision invitation and a ticket magnet, and it's also usually one of the cheapest fixes in this catalog: the records are dominated by bulbs, with the pedal switch behind them. The rule of thumb — one out is a bulb, all out is the switch.

This page is a focused cut of the broader Headlight or Brake Light Not Working records.

One brake light out

A single dead brake light is a bulb or a corroded socket — the dominant outcome here. Rear sockets live in a wet part of the car; green crust on the contacts is a normal companion find.

All brake lights out

When no brake lights work — often discovered by an annoyed driver behind you — the brake-light switch at the pedal is the classic answer. The same switch can also block shifting out of Park or confuse cruise control, which is a useful confirming clue.

The center light

The high-mount center light often fails separately, and on many vehicles it's an LED strip serviced as an assembly — the pricier corner of an otherwise cheap repair family.
