Airbag Light On — What It Usually Means

Based on real repair records · last updated September 4, 2026
23.1%
of these visits involve Sensor — typically $180 – $433 when it's the only fix
Computed from real repair visits where the customer reported an airbag light.

The airbag (SRS) light means the system has logged a fault and has disabled itself — the bags will not deploy while the light is on. The causes are mostly small electrical parts in high-wear locations.

Light after seat movement

The most common trigger lives under the front seats: connectors for the seat-mounted sensors and side airbags flex with every adjustment and eventually fault. Often a clean-and-reseat or a jumper repair.

Light with steering-wheel history

The clock spring — the wound ribbon cable inside the steering column — wears out and takes the driver's airbag circuit with it. Common on vehicles with heavy steering-wheel-button use.

After a battery change or jump

Low-voltage events can set airbag codes that persist until cleared with a scan tool. If the light appeared right after battery work, the fix may be just the code clear — verified, not assumed.
