The thermostat is a temperature-controlled valve that lets the engine warm up quickly, then holds it at operating temperature. Stuck closed, the engine overheats; stuck open, you get weak heat and poor fuel economy. It is a routine repair that also gets replaced preventively during major cooling-system work.
