The intake manifold distributes air (and on some engines coolant) to the cylinders. Plastic manifolds and their gaskets crack with heat cycles — vacuum leaks, rough idle, coolant loss, or a whistle that changes with RPM. Much of the bill is the strip-down to reach it, so cracked fittings and gaskets get renewed while everything is open.
