Fuel Tank Replacement Cost
What owners actually paid
The shaded middle is where half of all these repairs landed: $171 – $601. The price on any one car depends on the vehicle — the table below shows the range for each.
What this repair is
Steel tanks rust and plastic tanks crack at their seams or fittings — the giveaway is a fuel smell or a wet spot under the rear of the vehicle. The tank has to come down for replacement, so shops often pair it with a fuel pump if the original has age on it: the labor is already paid for.

Middle half of real invoices (25th–75th percentile) for that make and model, parts + labor.
What moves the price
- Pump renewed with it — the labor is already paid for — many owners replace an aging pump at the same time.
- Straps and lines — what rusted the tank rusted the hardware around it.
- Tank material — OEM plastic tanks can cost far more than aftermarket steel.
Quotes near the low end usually mean tank only with pump transferred. Quotes near the high end usually mean new pump module with the tank, rusted straps and lines replaced, plastic OEM tank.
