The EGR valve recirculates a measured dose of exhaust back into the engine to cut emissions. Carbon eventually jams it open or shut — rough idle, stalling, knock, or a check-engine light. Some are two bolts on top of the engine; others hide under intake plumbing, and labor follows accordingly.
