Car A/C Recharge Cost
What owners actually paid
The shaded middle is where half of all these repairs landed: $109 – $269. The price on any one car depends on the vehicle — the table below shows the range for each.
What this repair is
An A/C recharge restores the refrigerant that carries heat out of your cabin. Systems don't consume refrigerant — if it's low, it leaked — so a proper service includes checking for leaks, not just topping up. A recharge that lasts a season points to a slow leak worth chasing before it takes out the compressor.

What moves the price
- Refrigerant type — R-1234yf (most vehicles after about 2017) costs several times more per pound than R-134a.
- System size — trucks and vans with rear A/C hold much more refrigerant.
- Honest caveat — a system that needed a recharge has a leak — a recharge without a leak test buys time, not a fix.
Quotes near the low end usually mean top-off without evacuation, small system, no dye or leak test. Quotes near the high end usually mean R-1234yf refrigerant, large or rear-A/C systems, a leak test that found and fixed a small leak on the spot.
