- Burning oil smell — Hot-oil smell after driving — often without visible drips — is oil seeping onto the exhaust, and the valve cover gasket is the classic source.
- Burning rubber — Rubber smell points at a slipping belt or a hose resting on something hot.
- Acrid or electrical smell — Sharp, plastic-burning smells are electrical and get immediate attention — as does any smell paired with smoke.
What to expect from the shop
The smell narrows it: sweet means coolant, acrid means oil on the exhaust, rubber means a belt or dragging brake, raw fuel means stop and get it looked at now. Expect a visual inspection for the leak's source before a part is quoted. Oil on a hot exhaust is the most common — usually a valve cover gasket.
